So, the good news is, scientist assume that the earth will be livable for next few hundred million years. However, the bad news is, one simple thing is enough to change it completely. There are numerous ways that could wipe out the earth completely. These certain risks are highly unlikely events. But still, that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t pay attention to them. Specially, in a scenario like human extinction. It could be a man-made disaster or a natural disaster. But that doesn’t change the fact, that it will completely wipeout the earth as we know it. Here are some possible ways that might cause us to go extinct from this planet.
A modern nuclear weapon has the capability to kill 85 to 90 percent of the living beings within the explosion area. Which is a 4km radius from the explosion point. However, it can cause sever damages up to 24km. Although it doesn’t seem like a much of a threat to mankind, it is the “Nuclear winter” that we have to worry about. Nuclear winter happens when dusts and smokes block the sun. It would lead to temperature drops by at least 8 degrees Celsius. That could remain same for the next four to five-year period. Since there is no sunshine, people won’t be able to grow anything. The rest is pretty imaginable.
Nuclear weapons costs tons of money to build them. And it is a complicated engineering process. But biological warfare can develop and deploy at a very low-price range. Same goes with the chemical warfare. In the recent years, lot of organizations has used chemical weapons in their wars. These events shocked the world, and everyone understood the damage it can cause. Biological warfare isn’t much different from that. It can cause lot of negative impacts on human race and other living things. Advance sciences can create synthetic biological organisms, that can create never seen before diseases. If it is a fast spreading pandemic, we are pretty much over as a race.
Within our modern history, we have come across numerous pandemics. Which, happened back in 5th and 14th centuries. And another one on early 20th century. And the current pandemic that we are facing right now. Antibiotics are the best defense system we can have, against a pandemic situation like this. But they are not that effective when certain bacteria and viruses become resistant to antibodies. According to statistics, 700,000 people die, because of antibiotic resistant bacteria.
Artificial Intelligence is a rapidly growing area within technology. According to scientist, AI could surpass humans in nearly 50 years. By that time, AI will be able to perform most tasks that humans can perform. Yes, AI will have that ability, but it doesn’t have emotions and instincts. If you ask a ROBOT to do something, it will do it. But it wouldn’t care who is on its way. That’s just one threat. But if you consider AI weapon systems, things get even scarier. In wrong hands, it can destroy this planet in a matter of a seconds.
These are best possible ways that could desert the earth within a shortest period of time. However, there are lot of other ways, that we could go extinct from this planet. For instance, solar explosions, climate change, supervolcanic eruptions. These could cause the same fatalities as the above list. To be frank, in front of nature, we are pretty much vulnerable.
